Booking dhol players might seem straightforward. You choose how many players you want, agree a price and tell them where to arrive.
But having performed at and helped arrange entertainment for weddings and events, I can tell you there's more to consider than most people realise.
The type of performance, number of players, venue restrictions, experience of the performers and even the time between performances can all affect your booking.
This guide explains what you should know before hiring dhol players, including some practical details that customers often discover too late.

What can you book dhol players for?
Dhol players can perform at almost any type of celebration.
For weddings, some of the most popular performances include:
Bride's entrance. Live dhol can create a memorable entrance for the bride, whether it's a traditional celebration or a more contemporary wedding.
Groom's entrance. Dhol players are regularly booked to accompany the groom's arrival, creating excitement as family and friends celebrate.
Bride and groom entrance. A popular option for wedding receptions, particularly when the couple wants to make a high-energy entrance together.
Baraat procession. Dhol players accompany the wedding party during the procession, creating an atmosphere where guests can celebrate and dance.
Wedding reception entertainment. Dhol players can perform during the evening reception, either independently or alongside the DJ.
DJ and dhol fusion. Live dhol players perform alongside a DJ or professionally produced music set, bringing additional energy to the dance floor.
Dhol players can also be booked for birthdays, anniversaries, corporate events, private parties, product launches and other celebrations.
The important thing is choosing the right performance for your occasion.
How much does it cost to book dhol players?
There isn't one fixed price for hiring dhol players.
As a starting guide, a player with approximately one to five years of experience may charge from around £195.
For a highly experienced player from a recognised dhol team, prices may start from approximately £295.
These are indicative starting prices for one player. Actual quotations depend on the event.
Several factors affect the cost.
Experience and reputation
Established performers and recognised dhol teams may charge more because of their experience, presentation, demand and performance quality.
Location and travelling distance
Travel time and distance can influence pricing, particularly when performers need to travel a considerable distance or stay overnight.
Availability
Popular dates and peak wedding season weekends can be particularly busy.
A team with limited availability may not be able to offer the same arrangements as a team with several players available.
Number of players
Booking four players will generally cost more than booking one or two, although the final quotation depends on the overall requirements.
Performance requirements
An entrance, procession, stage performance and DJ fusion set can involve different preparation and scheduling requirements.
Additional choreography, special arrangements, coordinated uniforms or other production requirements may also affect the quotation.
Time on site
This is one of the biggest factors customers overlook.
Why can a short performance cost more than expected?
Let me give you a real example of how wedding reception timings work.
You book dhol players for your entrance at 7pm.
You then want the same players to perform alongside your DJ at 10pm or 10.30pm.
Although the actual playing time might be relatively short, the players could be committed to your venue for four or five hours.
That's completely different from booking a single entrance where the performers arrive, perform and leave within approximately an hour, assuming everything runs on time.
During that waiting period, the players may not be able to accept another booking.
This is why two bookings involving the same amount of performance time can have different prices.
My advice: Always provide the actual performance times when requesting a quotation, not just the total number of minutes you want the players to perform.
Also check whether the quotation includes travel, waiting time, any additional performances, special requirements and other agreed costs.
How many dhol players should you book?
There isn't one correct number for every event.
It depends on the venue, available space, budget and the impact you want to create.
One dhol player
One player can be sufficient for a small celebration or an event where space is limited.
Two dhol players
Two players are a popular option because they create a stronger visual and musical impact.
They can perform together in sync, which adds to the presentation.
Four dhol players
Four players can create an even bigger impact, particularly for grand entrances, large baraats and substantial celebrations.
Large dhol teams
Established teams may be able to provide more than ten players, and sometimes as many as twenty for particularly grand occasions.
The larger the team, the greater the potential visual and sound impact.
However, more players aren't automatically better.
You must consider the venue's acoustics, space, noise restrictions and the type of performance.
A team of four might look fantastic in a large ballroom but be unsuitable for a smaller venue with strict noise limits.
My advice: Don't choose the number of dhol players purely based on guest numbers. Consider the venue, performance and atmosphere you want to create.

What makes an exceptional DJ and dhol fusion performance?
One of the most popular ways to book dhol players is alongside a DJ during the wedding reception.
A typical DJ and dhol fusion performance lasts approximately 30 minutes.
The music may include Bollywood, Bhangra and English tracks, depending on the audience.
But there's a significant difference between an average performance and an exceptional one.
It's about more than playing the dhol
A basic performance might involve players standing in one place and drumming along to music.
An exceptional performance involves movement, energy and genuine crowd engagement.
Experienced performers know how to interact with guests, move around the stage or dance floor and build excitement.
Some performers can also incorporate hosting or MC-style interaction, encouraging guests to participate.
It's about showcasing the instrument and creating an atmosphere, rather than simply playing along to a backing track.
The music should suit your guests
Different crowds enjoy different musical styles.
Established dhol teams may have professionally produced sets designed around particular audiences.
For example:
- Bollywood sets: Popular Bollywood songs and recognisable Hindi music.
- Bhangra sets: High-energy Punjabi and Bhangra music.
- English and fusion sets: A combination of Western and South Asian music.
Depending on the performers' repertoire, fusion arrangements may also incorporate hip-hop, UK garage, dancehall, EDM and other styles.
Not every team performs every style, so it's important to discuss this beforehand.
Fusion weddings require particular experience
When two families from different cultural backgrounds come together, the music needs to appeal to both sides.
A well-produced fusion performance can combine musical styles in a way that brings everyone onto the dance floor.
This is an area where the experienced performers we work with can offer particular expertise, supported by real performance examples.
Making the set personal
One of the things we like to discuss with brides and grooms is whether they have favourite songs.
Although many dhol teams perform to professionally produced pre-mixed sets, it may be possible to incorporate a couple's favourite songs towards the end.
This can make the performance feel much more personal.
Any requests should be discussed and agreed with the performers in advance.
Coordination with your DJ
The DJ and dhol players need to work together.
That means agreeing the music, performance timing, introductions, sound arrangements and how the set fits into the evening.
For some weddings, a fusion performance works well when the dance floor opens.
For others, it's better later in the evening when guests are already dancing.
There isn't one perfect time for every reception.
The right decision depends on your schedule, audience and what you want to achieve.
Combining dhol with other entertainment
Dhol players can also form part of a larger entertainment arrangement involving Bhangra dancers, DJs, bands or an MC.
These combinations can create a particularly strong performance, provided everyone understands the timings and production requirements.
My advice: When comparing dhol teams, watch actual videos of their performances with guests. Look at the crowd engagement, movement, musical production and overall energy. A photograph alone won't show you what makes a performance exceptional.
How far in advance should you book dhol players?
My advice is to book as soon as your event date is confirmed and you know you want dhol players.
Most established teams work on a first-come, first-served basis.
Once a customer confirms the booking and pays the required deposit, the team reserves the relevant players.
Some dhol teams have several performers available and can cover multiple events on the same day.
They might have one group performing at a morning wedding and another performing at an evening reception.
However, once all their available players are booked, the team cannot accept further bookings for those times.
Popular dates and peak wedding season weekends often fill up first.
There isn't a fixed rule that you must book six, nine or twelve months in advance.
My advice: If there's a particular team you want, enquire early. If your event is only a few weeks away, it's still worth asking because suitable performers may have availability.
What should you look for in professional dhol players?
When comparing dhol players, I would consider five important factors.
Experience
Have they performed at weddings or events similar to yours?
Do they understand the timings, atmosphere and expectations of different types of celebrations?
Reliability
Look for clear communication, punctuality and professional organisation.
Appearance
Dhol players are often involved in some of the most photographed moments of a wedding.
Check their uniforms and overall presentation, particularly if you want a coordinated team.
Real performance videos
Look at their website, Instagram, TikTok or other social media channels.
Watch actual performances rather than relying only on promotional photographs.
Genuine customer reviews
Where available, check independent reviews on Google or Trustpilot.
Look for comments about punctuality, professionalism, performance quality and communication.
My advice: Don't make your decision purely on price. The quality and reliability of the performers can make a significant difference to an important wedding moment.
Can dhol players perform at a mandir or gurdwara?
Dhol players can be booked for celebrations associated with Hindu and Sikh weddings, but you should always respect the traditions and rules of the place of worship.
For Hindu weddings, dhol players are commonly booked for baraat processions before the mandap ceremony.
However, the mandir or venue may have specific restrictions on where performances can take place.
At gurdwaras, additional sensitivity is important.
Some gurdwaras do not allow dhol directly outside the building or within their grounds.
In certain circumstances, performances may be permitted further along the approach road, subject to the relevant permissions and local arrangements.
Never assume that a performance is allowed simply because you've seen it happen at another wedding.
My advice: Confirm the permitted location and timings with the mandir, gurdwara or venue before booking.
What should you check for an outdoor baraat?
Outdoor baraats can be spectacular, but there are practical details to consider.
Weather
Have a contingency plan in case of rain or unsuitable conditions.
Procession route
Confirm where the baraat starts and finishes.
Make sure the route is suitable for the wedding party, performers and any other entertainment.
Space and access
Consider how many people will be involved and whether there's enough room for the dhol players to perform safely.
Venue restrictions
Some venues permit dhol indoors but restrict outdoor performances.
Others have limits on the number of players, the duration of performances or the times when drumming is permitted.
These restrictions can be very specific.
Real examples of venue restrictions
Through our experience with wedding venues, we've encountered restrictions that customers should know about.
Froyle Park
We've encountered arrangements limiting outdoor dhol performances to approximately 10 minutes.
North Mymms
We've encountered arrangements permitting a maximum of two dhol players.
Natural History Museum, London
We've been advised of arrangements trialling a maximum of four dhol players.
Important: These are examples from our experience, not confirmed current venue policies. Rules can change, and different event spaces or arrangements may have different restrictions. Always confirm the latest requirements directly with the venue before making your booking.
Venue cut-off times
Some hotels and venues also restrict how late dhol performances can take place.
This can be particularly important at hotels with overnight guests.
Depending on the venue, drumming might need to finish by 9.30pm, 10pm or 10.30pm, or another specified time.
The venue or caterer may also have requirements that affect the event schedule.
Before booking, ask:
- Are dhol players permitted indoors and outdoors?
- Is there a maximum number of players?
- Is there a maximum performance duration?
- Are there restrictions on where the players can perform?
- Is there a specific cut-off time?
These questions can prevent problems on the day.
What about sound limiters?
This is something customers often overlook.
Dhol is naturally a loud instrument.
Some venues have sound limiters that monitor noise levels.
Depending on the system, exceeding the limit can interrupt the electrical supply to connected equipment.
Other systems may reduce or compress amplified sound.
That can affect the DJ and other equipment during the celebration.
If your venue has a sound limiter, I would generally suggest considering no more than two dhol players, subject to the venue's approval.
However, even one player could exceed a venue's permitted noise level.
The exact restrictions depend on the venue and its equipment.
My advice: Always ask whether the venue has a sound limiter, whether live dhol is permitted and whether previous performances have caused problems. Don't leave this conversation until the wedding day.
Can you book dhol players for destination weddings?
Yes.
Experienced UK dhol teams can travel internationally for destination weddings.
We work with performers who have substantial experience of destination celebrations, including large and prestigious events.
Destination weddings require additional planning.
Consider:
- Flights and travel arrangements.
- Accommodation.
- Equipment and baggage requirements.
- Performance dates and timings.
- Local venue restrictions.
- Work permission and other relevant local requirements.
- Whether the performers are needed for one event or several days.
If you're planning a multi-day celebration, explain exactly which events require dhol performances.
We can also share relevant examples of previous destination wedding performances and supporting content where available.
My advice: Share your destination, dates and full requirements as early as possible so that suitable arrangements and total costs can be discussed.
Final advice before booking dhol players
There is no single correct dhol performance for every wedding or celebration.
A small event might only need one player.
A wedding reception might benefit from two players for an entrance and a later DJ fusion set.
A large baraat or grand celebration might justify four or more players.
The important thing is finding the right performers for your event.
Before confirming your booking, check:
- The experience and presentation of the players.
- Genuine performance videos and reviews.
- The exact performance requirements.
- The number of players.
- The venue's restrictions.
- Your planned performance times.
- Total time required on site.
- Everything included in the quotation.
- The deposit, payment terms and booking conditions.
